Why is it called float glass?
Modern float glass owes its perfectly smooth sides and uniform thickness to the Pilkington process which was perfected in the 1950's. During the manufacturing process the molten glass actually floats on top of a pool of liquid tin. The glass then moves on to a kiln where it is further cooled to relieve any internal stress
